I’m getting ready to try something I’ve been meaning to try for a while. Sew up a coat. As I write, the wool is shrinking in the dryer. I’m using this method to shrink it, in case you’re wondering. It’s a red wool from Hancock Fabrics that I bought the last off the bolt last year. I will likely cut this on the floor, so that I can make absolutely sure all of my pieces fit, since I know this will be a tight squeeze, but I’m usually pretty good about being able to make things work with shorter yardages (or have enough excess to make something else).
The pattern? I’m hoping to make the blue version of Simplicity 2508. But, who knows, as short as I am, the short version may be long enough. (BTW, I wanted the white version, but apparently it’s suggested that people with my particular figure stay away from double breasted coats/jackets. I would say “phooey” on them, but this coat will be fairly expensive and time consuming, so I don’t want one I’ll hate when it’s done.)
Stay tuned for the muslin, I’m sure this will be an interesting experience. 😉
Anyway, I have no idea how this post got so lengthy, so I’m just going to wish everyone a fabulous (holiday) weekend!!
Happy Turkey! I love the choice in pattern. A red coat seems like a great pick me up of colour when the weather turns cold. I have not felt the draw to make coats. It’s funny what directions people are drawn to, coats are something I admire when others do it but feel no appeal to do it myself.

Also, perhaps all this bra talk going on is warping my mind, but your title of “I’m taking the plunge” my first thought was “Oh I bet she bought some plunge neckline bras too!”.

Haha! Actually, I think I might have one that is on it’s way to me…

Happy Turkey to you, it’s Columbus day on Monday here, so hubby gets the day off (YAY!!).
According to Mood fabrics, red is the color this season–so for like the first time ever I’ll be on trend. 😉 I know how you feel–I feel much the same way about jacket/blazers/whatever you call them. The thought of tailoring a jacket gives me hives.

Nothing wrong with a day off at all. Columbus Day lines up with Canadian Thanksgiving. I know I enjoyed a three day weekend.

I fancy sewing a coat this winter too! Not sure I’ll have the time though. Might have to live vicariously through you!

I hope you find the time to do it, but I’ll be happy to let live vicariously through my adventures. 🙂

I love that white jacket too! I have that pattern but not the fabric yet. With a toddler I just can’t justify white expensive wool. I can just imagine the disastrous end to that. This is a classic pattern and I’m sure in red it will look lovely on you! I can’t wait to see your progress.

I just bought this pattern for making a coat with…and I also have red wool set aside! So sad to hear that you don’t have enough fabric, though. I’m actually going to give it a try with fleece first as a (hopefully) wearable muslin, and I’ve only got 2 yards of it, so we’ll see!
